A Vision for Growth: Enhancing the Impact, Visibility, and Indexation of the Portuguese Kidney Journal (PKJ)

Abstract

As the new Editor-in-Chief of the PKJ, it is both an honor and a responsibility to lead this publication into its next phase of growth. First, I would like to acknowledge the excellent work carried out by the management of the Portuguese Society of Nephrology (SPN) and the previous editors of PKJ, which have enabled the journal to establish itself as a fundamental instrument for disseminating research carried out by the Portuguese nephrology community. Our mission is clear: to advance the field of kidney research by publishing high-quality, innovative work that influences clinical practice, policy, and future scientific inquiry. To achieve this, we must focus on three key objectives—increasing the journal’s impact, expanding its global visibility, and securing indexation in leading databases such as PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science.  

Impact begins with excellence. We will uphold the highest standards of peer review, ensuring that every published article meets rigorous methodological, ethical, and editorial criteria. To attract groundbreaking research, we will:  

- Prioritize clinical and translational studies with direct implications for patient care;  

- Encourage systematic reviews and meta-analyses to consolidate evidence in nephrology;  

- Feature cutting-edge basic science that pushes the boundaries of kidney research and  

- Introduce invited commentaries and editorials from global leaders to stimulate debate.  

By fostering a reputation for scholarly rigor, we aim to improve our citation metrics and positioning as a must-publish venue for researchers.  

Visibility is key to ensuring our content reaches the right audience. For this purpose we aim to:  

- Disseminate research via social media, engaging with nephrologists, researchers, and policymakers;

- Collaborate with SPN to cross-promote content and host webinars, and

- Publish themed issues focused on urgent topics to attract attention and submissions.

Indexation in major databases is critical for credibility. To meet the stringent criteria of PubMed, Scopus, and others, we aim to:  

- Ensure consistent publication schedules and uphold international publishing standards and   

- Track key metrics to demonstrate growth to indexing bodies.    

Achieving these goals requires collective effort. I invite researchers to submit their best work, reviewers to contribute their expertise, and readers to share our content widely. Together, we can elevate PKJ to new heights.  

 The journey ahead is ambitious, but with a commitment to quality, innovation, and inclusivity, I am confident we will succeed.
